The yearly safety visit
One electrician, one house, one honest report
The visit is not a sales call. We check what is there, write it down and leave the decision to you.
Panel cover off, with photos of the label and the breakers
A sample of outlets and switches in every room, tested
GFCI and AFCI test buttons pressed wherever they are fitted
Smoke and CO alarms present, sounding, and in date
Garage, outdoor outlets and the meter base seen from outside

When to book earlier
Signs a house shouldn't wait for its yearly visit
If any of these sound like your house, call and tell us. If you see sparks, smell burning or see smoke, call 911 first.
A breaker that keeps tripping
One that trips more than once a month is telling you something.
Warm or discolored plates
An outlet or switch that is warm to the touch, or has a brown mark.
Lights that dim or flicker
Especially when the furnace, dryer or a microwave starts.
Buzzing from the panel
A hum or a click inside the box, or a smell near it.
A two-prong house
Outlets with two slots and no ground, in rooms where you plug in more than a lamp.
A house changing hands
Buying, selling or renting out: the report is something to hand over.
About the visit
Questions about the visit
How long does the visit take?
Most houses take an hour or two. A larger or older house can take longer, and we tell you when we book.
Will the power go off?
Not for the whole visit. If we need to switch off a circuit or the main to look at something, we tell you first and keep it short.
Do I need to be home?
An adult needs to be home to let us in and to hear what we find. We can speak with you by phone if you're nearby.
Do you test every outlet?
We test a sample in every room, and every outlet within reach of water. If we see a problem, we test the rest of the circuit.
